Jeju: Discover Your Homeland 2020
G.O.A.’L. enjoyed a fun weekend with overseas adoptees who are living in Korea! We have been planning our trip to Jeju for a few months now and we were really excited to provide this opportunity for adoptees living in Korea to get together. Here are a few of our highlights from the trip!
We got to explore the rich culture and history of Jeju Island, as well as experience its natural beauty. On Saturday, we had a busy day exploring Jeju’s folk village, hiking to the peak of Seongsan Ilchulbong, and then cooling off at Jeongbang Waterfall. Later that evening, G.O.A.’L. and NCRC held a conference at the KAL Hotel about the contribution and roles of overseas adoptees in Korea.
On Sunday in Jeju, we had the chance to dive with ν΄λ (haenyeo), the female free divers of the island, known for their independent spirit and resiliency. They were recognized by UNESCO for their Intangible Cultural Heritage. Even though these female divers were well into their 70s, they still would dive everyday!
Later we enjoyed a Jeju specialty, black pork BBQ, and used natural dye from local indigo plants to design our own scarves. We finished the day at Dongmun Market, Jeju’s largest and oldest market.
We had so much fun in Jeju and can’t wait to do it again next year! Thank you to all our participants! We hope you enjoyed discovering a part of your homeland in Jeju!
